Day for Truth, Honor & Remembrance Proclamation

WHEREAS Lummi Nation honors our cherished ancestors sacrifice, their strength, and resilient survival of the Indian Boarding/ Residential School system; and
WHEREAS, since time immemorial our ancestors instilled in Lummi people values, beliefs, and the importance of taking care of one another; and
WHEREAS the Indian Boarding/ Residential Schools established by the United States Government to assimilate Indian children and prohibit Indigenous languages and practices separated our families; and
WHEREAS the Lummi Nation recognizes the importance of promoting awareness, healing, and education regarding the traumas of our families and all Indigenous Peoples as the result of Boarding/ Residential Schools assimilation tactics; and
WHEREAS the Lummi Nation recognizes the importance of promoting awareness, healing, and education regarding the traumas of our families and all Indigenous Peoples as the result of Boarding/ Residential Schools assimilation tactics; and
WHEREAS the Lummi Nation recognizes our Canadian neighbors for establishing a national holiday for Truth and Reconciliation, a day of healing and solidarity with Indigenous peoples in honor and remembrance of survivors and victims of the Indian residential school system; and
WHEREAS, today, we acknowledge the genocide, abuse, and assimilation of the children taken to boarding and residential schools which lead to many lives lost and many survivors with severe trauma; and
WHEREAS we acknowledge how the traumatic experiences of the boarding school survivors still affects us today; and
WHEREAS, Lummi Indian Business Council is committed to healing our historical traumas through a strengthened cultural identity, language proficiency, and preserving and promoting our Schelangen; and
NOW BE IT PROCLAIMED TO ALL ASSEMBLED AND TO ALL WHO READ THIS PROCLAMATION, that the Lummi Indian Business Council, acting through the Chairman, observes and declares September 30, 2021, as a Day of Truth, Healing, and Remembrance and invite the citizens of our Lummi Nation to honor and remember the survivors and victims of the Indian Boarding/ Residential School System; and
BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED, that Lummi Nation recognizes the importance of this day to bring awareness, unity, healing, and truth for our citizens and all Indigenous people through justice, truth, remembrance, and acknowledgement of the historical contributions of the boarding school system
BE IT FINALLY PROCLAIMED, on this Day of Truth, Honor, and Remembrance, Lummi unites with purpose and resolve, and call upon all residents to work together to observe this day as a day of learning, healing, truth and reconciliation and acknowledging our ancestors’ suffering as the result of the Indian Boarding/ Residential School system; and toward ending the cycle of genocide which was exacerbated by the Boarding Schools; and to promote peace and unity among all.
